Hey all,

Just read an article about former track star Tim Montgomery being indicted on heroin distribution charges.

It took me back to a simpler time in my life, when Saturdays meant spending some time watching ABC’s “Wide World Of Sports”.

Boxing was the thing I liked to watch the most, but you could count on the occasional skiing accident, and that show helped me to appreciate track and field events at the pro level.

I remember Tim Montgomery

Above is a picture of him after he broke the world record in the 100 meter run.

At one time he was half of an impressive sports couple – Marion Jones being the other half.

Two college educated, talented, personable young people with what looked like bright futures. But things even then weren’t as they seemed.

Marion, whose first husband (who was also her coach) C. J. Hunter had been caught up in illegal use of performance enhancing drugs, was herself using steroids to enhance her performance. In the 2000 Summer Olympics, Jones won five medals. It should have been an inspiration and triumphing moment, but it was tainted.

Shortly after winning her first medal it was announced by the International Olympic Committee that her coach/husband C. J. Hunter had failed four pre-Olympic drug tests, and despite the squeaky clean appearance and the great victory, all was not right.

The couple divorced in 2002. Enter Tim Montgomery.

Although Marion denied any use of prohibited drugs, truth caught up with her in 2007 and she was stripped of her records and medals and recieved a six month prison sentence for her involvement in the doping case and a money laundering scheme.

In 2006 Tim was indicted in the same money laundering scheme. Both have since lost their medals, their careers, and their credibility.

What went wrong?

And now the heroin charges against Tim Montgomery…. from the top of the world to the bottom.

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

On May 16, 2008 Tim Montgomery was sentenced to 46 months in prison for his part in the check fraud scheme. He still faces the heroin charges.

See ya.
